Free Comic Book Day 2014

Free Comic Book Day was upon us! FCBD is always celebrated on the first Saturday of May, and so we braved the sweltering heat to celebrate all things comic booky. :D

Our first stop was Books Kinokuniya at Ngee Ann City, where things were in full swing by the time I got there around 10am. Unlike other places, Kino’s comic books were random; you got what you got in the bag.

Our second stop was the stalwart GnB Comics, where they kept up their tradition of excellent guests. This year’s included artists Sheldon Goh, Alan Quah and Ivan Reis!

Big props to the folks at GnB Comics for their great crowd control this year! The lines are always incredibly long, so this year they adopted a FastPass approach where members got Priority Tickets in the weeks leading up to FCBD.

And you really did feel the difference! I was in the Priority Line and I think we were moving in twice as fast as the other line. There was still a long wait, but everyone understood because it’s FCBD and the store is quite small.

After getting my free comics, I joined the other long line for Ivan Reis. He’d been signing and sketching for several hours before I arrived, but he was still really nice and cheerful. :D

With Ivan Reis! Excuse the stupid smile, I was more than a little starstruck

I was lucky enough to meet him before the line was capped, cos they had other events to be at, but hurray!

I had a great time at FCBD, especially now that GnB has found a way of crowd control that works for them.

There’s a certain amount of nostalgia already; this year would be the last FCBD for Kino and GnB Comics before they move to new locations. I have many fond memories of both stores, especially since they’ve been at their current places for a while :’)
