We’re rapidly approaching the end of November which means it’s time for the Thank Goodness It’s Over party aka TGIO party! We’re also launching The Steampowered Globe, an anthology of steampunk stories, at the party!

Poster by the ever-wonderful Seriously Sarah

Date and Time: 3 December (Sat), 6.30pm onwards
Venue: NLB Multipurpose Room at B1
Dresscode: Steampunk encouraged but optional

There will be food in the cake sort of sense, but no real food-food. Parents and/or kids are encouraged but if you bring kids you’ll have to care for them. RSVP here!

The Steampowered Globe (which, in the interests of full disclosure, I have a story in) will be on sale there, at a special price of $15 – normally it’ll be $18+ because of GST and whatnot.

Here are the stories included in the anthology:

Ascension by Leow Hui Min Annabeth

No, They Dream Of Mechanical Hearts by Claire Cheong

Morrow’s Knight by Viki Chua (that’s me!)

Colours by Yuen Xiang Hao

Help! Same Angler Fish’s Been Gawking for Eight Minutes! by Ng Kum Hoon

And in a personal Nanowrimo update…

The goal is to publish this sampler of speculative fiction in time for the Singapore Writers Festival at the end of the year. It’s also edited by my friend June aka The Magical Harkow. Submissions close at the end of April!

Theme: HYBRID

Stories should have a link of some sort to Singapore.
These guidelines are for the speculative fiction sampler. Submissions are currently open.

Briefly:

Entries must be speculative fiction, between 2,000 to 6,500 words long in English

Entries close on 30 April 2011

Each person can submit up to three entries, but only one would be chosen

Reprints of previously-published stories are also accepted, but the author must have retained the right

Do note that you won’t be paid, since the main purpose of this anthology is to provide exposure for Singapore specfic writers. Check out the full submission guidelines on their website.

Time: 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Venue: Multipurpose Room, Level B1, NLB HQ
Theme: Superheroes / Graphic novels

It’s three events rolled into one, which are:

Nanowrimo Kick-Off Party! Join the Singapore chapter of Nanowrimo as we kick off November with friends and, more importantly, cake!

Bubble G.U.M. launch! YAY OUR SECOND BOOK YAY! We’re launching Bubble G.U.M., the HSWG’s second book! You can totally buy the book there at a special price of $15; it’ll be something like $19 when it hits bookstores. Plus almost all of us will be there to autograph copies of the book :D

Graphic novel and speculative fiction discussion! More like an informal chat, but yes, comic people and writers! This is for you. We have no real plan for this, so come and talk to other people who have the same interest in the genre!

Entry to all of these are free, but please note that we’ve had an amazing number of RSVPs this year. We’ve passed the maximum number of people the room can hold, so there’s a chance you might be turned away by the library staff. This is due to safety concerns, and we hope for your understanding.

A quick competition update! I saw this in the back of True Singapore Ghost Stories 20, which you can find at most local bookstores.

Angsana Books, an imprint of Flame of the Forest Publishing, is offering S$2,000/RM4,000 in cash and other prizes for short ghost stories.

Here’s what it says in the back of the book:

All you have to do is to write a ghost story, preferably based on a personal experience. About 700 words will do; we are not fussy about length. We are fussy about entertainment value. Entries must be ORIGINAL, that is, they must be yours and unpublished. If your story is chosen for publication, or if we think it’s a good story, you win an amount up to S$100/RM200. The contest is open to all.

Winners will be announced in the next book but you must claim your prize within six months from the date of the next book. We will write to the winners but please make sure you have listed your names and addresses clearly and correctly.

You can send in photos or illustrations, which may be published as well. You can send in as many entries as you want through snail mail or email.

The address:

Sign-in area: stickers, Vicious the Ninja Bunny, sign-in sheet, assorted condiments

So I arrived early and set up for the arrival, then Sarah of Seriously Sarah arrived with more stuff! Awesome stuff of the prizey sort.

Have a funny story: she came into the cafe with her bags and no cake. I thought the cake had met with some sort of mishap, and I experienced a moment of panic. All I could think of was “THE CAKE WAS A LIE!”.

It turns out the (extremely large and heavy) cake was in the car. She went back to get it. And this was right after I’d been joking with a Wrimo about the cake not being a lie.

More and more Wrimos started arriving so we could really get the party started.

Wrimos galore

There were quiz questions, and we gave out all sorts of prizes. There were prizes for Highest Wordcount (200,000+ words – amazing), Best Last Line, Earliest New Wrimo of 2009, among others.

It was all rather fun, even from the ML side of things. After all the prizes and quizzes, there was cake! :D

The cake isn't a lie

It was an awesome cake. The ’50′ was, of course, for Nanowrimo’s 50,000-word goal. The coins were chocolate Euros, which was amusing because I didn’t even know they made chocolate coins in Euros.

The yellow stuff next to the coins are meant to be gold bars, I think. They were made out of white chocolate colored yellow. Everybody was wondering what the heck they were, until someone cut them up into little cubes and passed it around. They were quite nice, even if the color was a bit off-putting.

The cake in all its yummy glory!

Cake cutting

After the cake, we had the refreshments catered by the Arts House: muffins (with chocolate cores), assorted mini-cakes, puffs, and beverages. Lots of sugar meant a lot of interesting conversations were had :D

While we ate some of us did readings! Mostly from Happiness At The End of The World, a collection of short stories that I’m in ($18 from the publisher, hinthintnudgenudge) but also from our Nanovels. I read the Phail Whale bits from my Nanovel :D

Sarah Coldheart reading

It was good. I had some extremely entertaining conversations, cake, and other sugary baked goods. And as we all know, cake and assorted sugary baked goods are always good.

Happy MLs are happy

Til next year! :D

Don’t panic!

It’s a site bug that was just discovered by the folks in Australia and NZ. HQ is working on fixing it.

Currently, the only workaround is to change your timezone to something further back.

More updates as we get them.
